Don't forget that the availability of fresh local produce continues well beyond Halloween. On Saturday, two farmers markets in Cooper Young kicked off the winter season with an abundant selection of seasonal vegetables and other local products such as honey, goat cheese and organic whole wheat bread.
There were tacos and French toast too, thanks to the food truck from Fuel Cafe that pulled into the Cooper Young Farmers Market in the parking lot at First Congo Church. "I think we'll come back every Saturday," said chef Eric Proveaux, dishing up lunch for a hungry shopper.
Two blocks down the street, local purveyors were also busy selling salad greens, kale, root vegetables, fresh bread, pork and beef for their third winter season in the parking lot of Tsunami restaurant. The vendors, like their compatriots up the street, will be selling local produce and products every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until the spring markets open again next years.
"It's so cool having two markets," said Brandon Pugh of Delta Sol Farms. "Now, people can shop and get in their morning walk going from one place to another."
Undoubtedly, the two markets energized the Cooper Young neighborhood Saturday with a healthy and happy feel-good vibe that included my excitement about pepper bacon, gorgeous daikon radishes and spring mix so fresh it lasted in my refrigerator for the next five days.
More specifically, the vendors at the Tsunami winter market include dairy products from Evergreen Farms, Dodson's sweet potatoes and greens, McCarter coffee, True Vine greens and winter vegetables, Bonnie Blue goat cheese, Shoaf's Loaf organic bakery, Flora flowers and produce, Donnell Angus Beef, Newman Farm Berkshire Park, Gracious Gardens lettuce mixes, and Micmak Farms heirloom tomotoes. Lake's Farm Raised Catfish will also be there every other week.
The equally delicious list of vendors at the Cooper Young Farmers Market include Bennett-Burks nursery, Tom's Tiny Kitchen, Delta Pecans, Yippie Hippie granola, Bill's Gardening, Wolf River honey, Boulangeria Olivier, Delta Sol Farms, Grow Memphis, Rolling Stone artison chocolates, J. Brooks Coffee and Richardson vegetables.
