If you love Elvis and candy, you've probably already purchased an Elvis chocolate bar from Dinstuhl's, the longtime Memphis candy maker. Now you can try an Aloha from Hawaii Coconut Crunch, the company's latest addition to it's Elvis-centric candy line. The company is promoting the bar during Elvis Week with a sampling today from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Elvis Hawaii shop in Graceland Crossing.
For foodie fans in town to honor the King, the shops at Graceland offer lots of other food-centric gifts with an Elvis twist. The most popular is a box a peanut butter and banana salt water taffy for $9.99, according to gift shop employees. Besides the candy, the box offers a recipe on the back for a peanut butter and banana sandwich. (No, the taffy is not part of the recipe.)
I spent an hour or so marveling at the food and kitchen items scattered throughout Graceland's gift shops. Some are expected (aprons, cookbooks, recipe cards, shot glasses, coffee mugs), but others are quite creative. Some of my favorites are the guitar-shaped tub of buttered popcorn with the Aloha Elvis on the label, the Elvis Mr. Potato Head, and a refrigerator magnet that includes a BBQ sauce recipe, along with with photos of Elvis and the recipe's ingredients.
