Mike Turner, manager of Jack Magoo's on Broad Ave., with Wheach Peach Wheat, his new favorite beer for summer.
In a spontaneous move to get out and do something on Saturday night, Tony and I opted for a first time visit to Jack Magoo’s Sports Bar & Grill on Broad Avenue. It was a fine decision. We met Mike Turner, aka Little Mikey, who most of our pals know from Neal’s before the Midtown bar burned down last year. Turner’s now managing Magoo’s and mixing up some lovely beer cocktails.
Admittedly, I was a little hesitant to jump into that game. First, I’m not crazy about beer, and second, I am very particular about my cocktails. But Mikey is a persuasive sort, especially when he says Wheach Peach Wheat beer is the perfect brew for summer.
Wheach is from O'Fallon Brewery near St. Louis and has an adorable logo that makes you want to play Pac-Man.
“In Los Angeles, beer cocktails are huge,” Mikey said, mixing up the Wheach with a little peach schnapps, a shot of orange juice and slice of fresh orange. It was delicious and made me quite tipsy.
For Tony, he made an off-menu concoction he calls Barbecue Beer: a mix of PPR draft, Whiskey Willie’s Bloody Mary Mix, Cattleman’s BBQ sauce and his house blend of kosher salt and celery seed rimmed on the glass. It tasted fun and frivolous, like a carbonated Bloody Mary.
Between the drinks and Little Mikey, we were charmed by the bar which has a comfortable lived in feel with burnished oak floors, exposed brick walls and elevated views of Broad Street from its second story. Jack Magoo’s also has the largest patio in Memphis with DJ’s on weekends and table umbrellas to hold back the summer heat.
See for yourself on June 9, when Magoo's will host a tasting for beers (the bar has 20 on tap), beer cocktails and food from the menu. The event is $15.Jack Magoo’s Sports Bar & Grill, 2583 Broad Ave. (746-9612)
