Alina Bovkun
Memphis (and Memphis magazine) got lucky when 20-year-old Alina Bovkun began a work exchange program here from her native Voronezh, Russia. The model for our annual fashion feature, Alina truly became a "Delta Queen," when we took her to Clarksdale, Mississippi, for the photo shoot. Though it was a bit difficult for her to understand why people would pay good money to spend the night in old shacks at the Shack-Up Inn (especially since she works as a concierge at the decidedly more upscale Peabody) she eventually figured out the musical heritage behind her old, beat-up quarters. During the two-day shoot, Alina discovered that there's a place called Sonic that will bring food to your car window, had her first barbecue sandwich, and found out how much she hates fire ants.*
Meaghan Farno
Intern Meaghan Farno hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and although she doesn't know how she ended up in Memphis either, she does know that she has had a great time at Rhodes College . . . studying of course. As a senior English lit major, Meaghan loves Sunday afternoon naps, Peeps in her Easter basket, and sarcasm. She is very glad she didn't have to go to Clarksdale, because she hates fire ants.
Alicia George
What can't Alicia do? In addition to her position as sales consultant, assistant buyer, and stylist for Joseph, she has styled numerous magazine editorials, TV commercials, music videos, films, ads, and corporate businesses. This is her second year working on Memphis ' fashion feature, and we hope not her last. (We think she has the funniest laugh of all time, as well as a Herculean work ethic.) Alicia enjoys styling private clients, foreign films, and caramel macchiatos, and hates fire ants.
Brad Jones
Photographer Brad Jones is a native of Coldwater, Mississippi. He moved to Memphis to attend Memphis College of Art, where he planned to major in illustration. He graduated from MCA with a BFA in photography in 2001. He began shooting for Memphis magazine in 2001. He loves good barbecue, Miller Lite, and hates fire ants.
Fred, Bubba, Bob, and Carl
These four (and about 4,000 of their closest friends) wanted so desperately to be in the Memphis magazine fashion feature they wouldn't take no for an answer. If you look closely, you might spot one of them in any of the pictures from pages 46 to 56. They even crawled into bed with art director Hudd Byard and bit him a few dozen times as he slept just to let him know how serious they were about being included. Natives of Clarksdale, these guys love mice, ground-nesting animals, and the taste of human flesh, and hate Raid.
