Head over to the MidSouth World Dance Center (MWDC) on Saturday, July 30th, and try free demonstrations of a diverse range of dances — Argentine tango, Spanish flamenco, belly dance, hip-hop, and more.
"Our goal with this open house is to introduce ourselves to Memphians who haven't yet mustered the courage to try one of our classes," says Liz London, the center's director and principal instructor of Memphis Raqs Bellydance. "Many adults see a dance class listing and think, 'That's not for me.' On the contrary, we have classes for every stage of your life."
For instance, those of a certain age can try the "seniors-specific" classes, including "Not So Country Line Dancing," and the belly dance sessions dubbed "Hot Flashes in Hip Sashes." For women at the child-bearing end of the spectrum, the center offers prenatal classes — not to mention the children-friendly waiting room where dancing parents can keep an eye on their kids.
MWDC, which opened in June 2010, is located at 3100 Walnut Grove Road, Suite 204, across from Pier I. In addition to dance classes, it offers offers massage, spa treatments, relaxation workshops, and local artisan boutiques. At the open house — which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. — licensed massage therapist Holly Lissner will give free 10-minute massages..
London encourages Memphians to check out the full schedule of classes at midsouthworlddancecenter.com, adding. "You'll be surprised how quickly you'll feel part of our community here."
