Vance Lauderdale
"Only the Lauderdales had the savoir-faire to wear neckties of such impressive proportions," says our monthly columnist and this month's Point/Counterpoint contributor, Vance Lauderdale. "This particular photograph — always one of mother's favorites — was taken to commemorate my graduation from elementary school in Edinburgh when I was a young lad of 19." The same image was later used to promote the Lauderdale family's line of pomade, trusses, and hemorrhoid creams — ill-conceived ventures that, as with all the other Lauderdale businesses — failed.
Justin Fox Burks Using Memphis' unique texture for inspiration, freelance photojournalist and this month's cover photographer Justin Fox Burks captures interesting and decisive images of this city's inhabitants. In 2005, his portraits of artists, musicians, and newsmakers was shown at Jack Robinson Gallery. In addition to his regular contributions to Rhodes and the Memphis Flyer , Burks' photographs have appeared in The Oxford American, the London Independent, and Mojo magazine. He earned his B.F.A. in photography at the University of Memphis. When not behind a camera, he's trying out new vegetarian recipes and making and recording music with friends.
Frank Murtaugh
Resident sports fanatic Frank Murtaugh has been with Memphis magazine since 1992 and managing editor since 1995. A graduate of Tufts University, he's written on a range of topics from Imperial China to Redbirds baseball. Frank covers sports for the Memphis Flyer , for whom he writes a weekly web column, "From My Seat." He squeezes his job in between ventures with his wife and two daughters.
