As I'm typing this blog posting, the clock has just struck 10 a.m. That means it's the beginning of the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County's innaugural 36-hour Mega Adoptathon, which wraps up tomorrow at 10 p.m.
HSMSC will remain open the whole time, with hourly adoption specials. One of those is "Howl at the Moon," in which approved adopters won't pay any adoption fee from midnight to sunrise. Attendees also can look forward to a free dog-training session tonight and tomorrow at 6 p.m. If you adopt a dog from one of the sessions, you get a 50 percent discount on your adoption fee.
Families also are invited to attend a free outdoor screening of "Lady and the Tramp" tonight at 8. Free popcorn will be served, and a social/adoption hour begins at 7.
A variety of rescue groups will be represented at the Adoptathon, including Collierville Animal Services, Memphis Animal Services, Real Good Dog Rescue, Streetdog Foundation, and others.
Here's a list of specials you can expect today and tomorrow:
- Anytime in the next hour: No adoption fee when you donate an item from the HSMSC wish list, which is available at www.memphishumane.org.
- 11 a.m.: White animals, $20
- Noon: Black animals, $20
- 1 p.m.: $1 adoption fee for single animals
- 2 p.m.: Adopt two pets for the price of one
- 3 p.m.: 40 percent off any animal when you show a public servant ID
- 4 p.m.: 50 percent off pit bulls and pit mixes
- 5 p.m.: $5 for animals older than 5
- 6 p.m.: Donate an item from the wish list and pay no adoption fee
- 7 p.m.: White animals, $20
- 8 p.m.: Black animals, $20
- 9 p.m.: $1 adoption fee for single animals
- 10 p.m.: Adopt two pets for the price of one
- 11 p.m.: "Turn It Up," $11 for animals with musical names
