Want to escape the heat and still keep the body moving? Join the Hooper Troopers on Saturday, July 16th, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., for their second play date — now a monthly event — in the atrium of Minglewood Hall at 1555 Madison, The first half-hour features impromptu instruction for hula-hooping beginners. Then the floor is open for practice and play. The $5 at-the door fee goes to Minglewood Hall for use of its space.
Want to know more about this new and booming exercise trend? The group resumes hoop classes in August at the Mid-South World Dance Center, 3100 Walnut Grove Rd. You can learn hoop cardio (movement and exercises focused on fitness) on Mondays, 6-7 p.m.; intro to hoop dance, Wednesdays 5:30-6:30 p.m.; and intermediate hoop dance, Wednesdays, 6:45-7:45 p.m.
The Hooper Troopers are three friends — Adriene Holland (shown here), Megan Simpson, and Abbey Pommer — who craft and sell hula hoops to encourage exercise, play, and most of all joy. You're likely to see them at festivals, markets, concerts, and birthday parties, promoting hooping's benefits to body and soul.
