Hudd Byard
Art Director Hudd Byard nearly had his arm twisted off while we cajoled him into gracing this month's contributors' page. But as the art guru responsible for the magazine's redesigned logo and look, it's high time we recognized him.
A graduate of the University of Memphis with a major in graphic design, Hudd came to Memphis magazine as an "intern," and soon earned an associate art director position. He left for a year's stint as an associate designer at GQ magazine in New York, working under the legendary Fred Woodward (this magazine's first art director), but returned to Memphis when the lure of the South became too great. When longtime art director Murry Keith was promoted to creative director, Hudd took on the title, and set about redesigning the magazine just in time for our 30th anniversary issue in April 2006.
When not designing Memphis , wielding a hammer or paintbrush, he can be found behind the lens of one of his many cameras, or rounding up teens with his wife, Lindsey, who serves as director of children and student ministries for First United Methodist Church in Millington.
Carson Irwin
After declaring just about every major she could at Rhodes College, Carson finally settled on English with a concentration in creative writing. A native Memphian who recently migrated from the suburbs to Midtown, she has become fascinated by our city's music, art, film, and anything else entertainment related. She is set to graduate in May 2008 and is loving her editorial internship at Memphis magazine.
Larry Kuzniewski
Photographer Larry Kuzniewski is as much a part of Memphis magazine as the city itself. Since setting up shop here in 1974, he's shot more than 80 covers, making him the most prolific cover photographer in this magazine's history. He's taken on a challenge shooting our Style section this month (pages 23 and 24), as working with lip gloss proved to be a sticky situation. He rose to the occasion, — even embracing his feminine side. (Cherry Burst is so your color, LK. )
Frank Murtaugh
Managing editor Frank Murtaugh was the most excited staffer to see Memphis magazine celebrate its 31st birthday this month. (Read about his numerological fetish in "Last Stand" on page 152.) He also celebrates a 10th birthday this month, that of the Memphis Redbirds. Any local baseball fan will recognize the names on Frank's All-Decade team. As for his favorite golfer, it's not John Daly. See page 29.
Marilyn Sadler
In researching the many articles she's written for Memphis , Senior Editor Marilyn Sadler likes digging for details. In her cover story on outgoing City Attorney Sara Hall, she learned that Hall keeps a list of "things I want to do before I die." During her 16 years with Memphis , Sadler has covered topics ranging from date rape to death-row inmates, all-white country clubs and crack-addicted mothers.
