I just finished reading the June issue of Memphis magazine. Great job on the medical features, but I"d love to see nurses receive some much-needed appreciation, too. With the current nursing shortage in the United States and stories such as the one about the nurse who washed the hair of Flo Larson's daughter, I believe it is high time for nurses to spend a little time in the spotlight. Nurses provide the caring touch for patients and families. How about a little recognition for a whole lot of grace?

I stumbled on your years-old piece about Richard Halliburton this evening and it surely touched a chord. A teacher read to us from one of his books when I was in 7th grade; it set me on a lifetime of travel - including climbing Mt. Fuji, as he did. Now closing in on 75, I am planning my last major trip, having seen all of the world I ever wanted to - all because of Halliburton. Why not reprint some of his writings in your magazine? Let folks see what the world was like when it was innocent and all travel outside Tennessee was a Glorious Adventure.

I was reading your story about Welcome Wagon. It holds wonderful memories for me, as I was one of their managers in 1966-67. My route was from Memphis to Waverly, TN.
A woman by the name of Barbara McPhail was my manager, and sent me all over the state to train other ladies to be Welcome Wagon hostesses. What a wonderful time I had at meetings and teaching around the state. The Chamber of Commerce gave us a listing of new businesses in the area and we were off to see what they would donate for our baskets. What a marketing concept, and cheap advertising.
I have lived in three countries and seven states since I was a young woman in Memphis. My late husband was retired Navy and we have lived everywhere, but I treasure the few years I lived in Memphis and was part of a wonderful organization named Welcome Wagon. Thanks for such a wonderful recounting of how it started and what it was. Those were the days! Thanks for the memories.
