Got Moxy?Downtown's latest boutique hotel is looking at you, millenials.by Samuel X. CicciThe newest building on Main Street oozes bright colors, class, and fun. But this isn’t the city’s newest club or gallery; rather, Downtown Memphis’ newest hotel concept opened its doors to the public recently. Sitting by Court Square at 40 North Main, Moxy Hotel, a Marriott brand, wants to stand out from other conventional hospitality offerings. “It's a fun, vibrant, stylish hotel,” says Greg Averbuch, founder and president of Summit Management Group. “It’s a hotel that's centered around the millennial demographic, but more than just an age group, it's really about the experiential traveler that's looking for something fresh and innovative.”Summit also manages the adjacent SpringHill Suites and Courtyard establishments, but Averbuch had wanted to try something different in the Bluff City. “We’ve been looking at this area since the '90s,” he says. “Travelers are interested in coming and seeing the sights, sounds, and flavors that Downtown Memphis has to offer. Our lobby has several zones where people can mix and mingle for all types of purposes. It’s a really activated area in the hotel, and Moxy’s activation on Court Square is very exciting for the neighborhood and helps to anchor the center of Downtown.”Moxy's twists emerge as soon as visitors set foot on the premises. The lobby hosts pinball machines, foosball tables, and shuffleboard activities that complement the bar, which also serves as the check-in area. For those not in the mood for human interaction, online check-in is available. More attractions sit outside on the front porch, including Ping-Pong tables, a bocce ball court, and fire pits. The hotel has 119 rooms, including four specialty suites. “They were created in a really thoughtful style,” says Averbuch, “with LVT hardwood flooring, and a modular design so that guests can utilize the rooms any way they want.” The residences are equipped with internet TV’s that have Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, and other media apps. Guests can also easily connect their own devices for anything from leisure to business functionality.Memphis has seen a surge of boutique options Downtown in recent times, which Inside Memphis Business covered earlier this year. With Memphis’ hospitality industry having seen a profitable last decade, Summit invested more than $3 million in the Moxy project. “We’ve been very thoughtful throughout the whole process,” says Averbuch. “We were an early adopter of the Moxy brand, and I’m very excited about the designs, the guest rooms, the activation on Court Square, and I think it really fits in well with the locals and travelers that live in and come to visit Downtown Memphis.”Moxy Hotel was designed by Manuel Zeitlin Architects in association with Memphis’ Bounds and Gillespie Architects.NEWS FROM OTHER SOURCES> Christopher R.
