Aquarian Blood performing at Black Lodge Video
2015 has already been an interesting year for local music with new bands sprouting up out of nowhere and the opening of the Memphis Record Pressing plant in Bartlett. One of the bands who has already taken advantage of the Memphis Record Pressing plant (with the help of Goner Records) is Aquarian Blood, the seven-piece garage rock freak show formed from the ashes of Moving Finger. The “Savage Mind” single on Goner Records will be available on Record Store Day, and Aquarian Blood is rumored to play the Cooper-Young Gazebo to celebrate the release.
Blackberries (formerly known as Whoa! Blackberries) have only played a few shows since forming, but they are already in contention for one of the most interesting psych rock bands to come out of Memphis in recent memory. Some of the members of Blackberries aren’t technically allowed to be in some of the 21+ clubs they’ve performed at, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing a slew of live shows this year. Blackberries are also playing the Cooper-Young Gazebo on Saturday, April 18th.
A group that’s been around for a while but criminally underlooked is Chickasaw Mound featuring Jesse James Davis. I recently wrote about Chickasaw Mound for the Memphis Flyer Music Blog, but allow me to drive the point home about Davis one more time. The man can sing. Listen to “Dream Girl” and tell me that Davis wouldn’t have given Box Tops-era Chilton a run for his money.
Fun Fact: All three of these bands have one guitarist in common, but you’ll have to go see the bands perform to find out who the mastermind is.
