Fri., Jan. 29, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Mardi Gras might be next weekend, but you can try out that mask at this mystery artist event. Bid on artwork without the benefit of having the artist’s name revealed. You might just get a piece from someone famous or discover an artist whose work you didn’t even know you liked. Who doesn’t love a little mystery? And of course there will be eats and drinks to the tunes of Ian Shapiro. It all benefits the Botanic Garden’s environmental programming. I’ll see you there—incognito.

I was a chef at an early age. One of my favorite things to do as a child was to make my father pies. These were not your traditional pies, mind you. I was what you might call an experimental chef. One of my favorites was the hot dog-Rice Crispy-black pepper-chocolate pie. I presented the concoction to my father and sat staring intently to see how he liked it. Suddenly my mother distracted me and when I turned back around, he had eaten all of it—but wait a minute—was that some of my pie I saw in the sink? I started to think he hadn’t eaten it at all, but had actually dumped it down the drain when my back was turned. But he assured me he ate every last bite and it was quite yummy. You know where else you can find yummy, chocolatey concoctions? The Oak Court Mall on Saturday. Don’t worry, though, I don’t think they used any of my old recipes. Their stuff is actually quite edible. And it benefits the Kidney Foundation.
