Food agony number one: Spotting the Los Jarochos taco truck at Perkins and Summer after work, racing home to pick up my husband, and driving back to the truck before realizing that neither one of us had any cash. (We found a bank branch two blocks away. Yet another reason Summer rocks.)
Food agony number two: Deciding to eat our tacos at home, getting stopped by a slow train, and smelling the intoxicating aroma of steak, ham, bacon, chorizo, onion, peppers, cilantro and jalapeno seeping out of the bag.
If you haven’t eaten yet at Tacos Los Jarochos, get ready for a treat. The menu is simple: seven types of corn tacos, two different alambres (a spicy fajita-type mixture with green peppers, onion and cheese on a flour tortilla), and a sweet Mexican soft drink called Jarritos in two flavors. We got mandarin.
We also ordered the four-meat Discada Jarocha taco and the Barbacoa, or beef barbecue, along with both types of alambres: shrimp and steak. Our food was ready in five minutes, and our total bill was $10.25.
Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of Mexican food, but this quick and affordable food-to-go is satisfying, flavorful and fun to order. There’s a festive, almost carnival-like feel to the truck at night, and we liked our dinner so much we never sat down once we started eating. We just stood at the kichen counter sharing bites and ranking our favorites. (Hint: Don’t miss the Discada Jarocha.)
While some food trucks move around, Tacos Los Jarochos seems smittened with the southwestern corner of Summer and Perkins, at least after 3 p.m. It operates sevens days a week, and here’s how Jacob, who waited on us, explains the truck’s hours: “Monday through Saturday, we get here around 2:30 or 3 and stay until 10 or 10:30. On Sundays, we don’t start until 4.”(Tacos Los Jarochos, Summer and Perkins about 3 to 10 p.m., 314-5735)
