Memphians who vacation on the Gulf Coast likely know Another Broken Egg Cafe, a wildly popular brunch, lunch, and breakfast franchise that spread quickly into the Florida Panhandle from its original locations in Louisiana. Cookbook author Jennifer Chandler was so enthusiastic about the restaurant’s first Memphis location that she took her husband Paul on an opening-day brunch date.
“He is crazy about this place,” Chandler said, offering up his much-loved scrambler: Popeye’s Favorite, a mix of scrambled eggs, bacon, onion, fresh spinach, and Monterey Jack plated with English muffins and country potatoes on a Brown Drip serving skillet.
Although tempted by the recommendation, we veered instead toward excess, an easy detour to take after diving into signature biscuit beignets, deep-fried, doused with powdered sugar, and served with a small dipping bowl of honey marmalade. From there, we embraced our inner eating orgy: Smoked Salmon Benny, an elaborate stack of bagel, salmon, capers, diced onions, two poached eggs, and whipped cream cheese and a crispy Belgian waffle dressed up like bananas Foster.
On a subsequent visit, we sat on the restaurant’s covered patio and tried to eat healthy, ordering kale and salmon salad with honey jalapeno vinaigrette. The salad was ample and well-prepared, as were our drinks: a Bloody Mary garnished with lime and pickled okra and a stunning sundae glass of chocolate milk, topped with three inches of whipped cream and made with Hershey’s syrup, just like home.
“Since we opened, there have been only two days when we didn’t serve at least 200 people,” said general manager Beau Bates, who relocated to open the company’s 45th store. “The owners are already looking for another location in Memphis.”
