Christmas is the time of giving, and many families instill traditions of volunteering on the holiday. One alternative to joining the throngs of families hoping to have an experience together may be to pledge as a volunteer at one of these charitable organizations, either throughout the year or on a day in 2016 when perhaps they are understaffed or short-handed. You can also check out Volunteer Odyssey to get matched up with an opportunity not listed here.
1. If you’d like to spread Christmas cheer… Starry Nights
The Starry Nights experience at Shelby Farms runs through December 27th and needs volunteers. You can sign up online at Volunteer Memphis.
2. If you’d like to have a variety of things to do… MIFA
MIFA has all kinds of opportunities, like driving for Meals on Wheels, mentorships for high school students, and nursing home advocacy.
3. If you’re bilingual… Friends for Life
The organization dedicated to helping people affected by and infected with HIV/AIDS is looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers, on top of their other volunteer opportunities, such as the food pantry.
4. If you have a green thumb… Grow Memphis
Grow Memphis has community gardens popping up everywhere in various neighborhoods throughout the city. If you’ve got a green thumb or are interested in gardening, contact them for volunteer opportunities.
5. If you love to read… Literacy Memphis
With more than 100,000 estimated people in the Memphis area that cannot read well enough to get a job, volunteers are needed to help tutor adults. Other volunteer opportunities are available, for special events and more.
6. If you’re a pet person… the Humane Society
Walking dogs seems like a chore for some, but the Humane Society needs volunteers to help walk dogs and clean kennels, on top of fostering needs.
