The National Civil Rights Museum will be closed on New Year's Day. Regular hours resume on Saturday and Alan LeQuire's colossal tribute exhibit, "Cultural Heroes," can be viewed.
Beale Street
Fri., Jan. 1, 4:30 p.m.
Arkansas faces Kansas State on Saturday at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. You can cheer the teams on at the pep rally on Beale Street on Friday. And by pep rally, I mean a parade. You'll be celebrating New Year's Eve on Beale Street anyway—just stay a little longer for the parade.
National Civil Rights Museum, 450 Mulberry
Through Feb. 25, 2016
When I it comes to art, I like the back story. And the back story to this exhibition is quite amazing. Alan Lequire was quite taken with an exhibit in the Cluny Museum in Paris France. The exhibit featured large heads of the Kings of France broken off of Notre Dame during the French Revolution and rediscovered in the 1970s. LeQuire decided to honor some of his personal role models with oversized clay sculptures like the ones he had seen in France. Currently on display at the National Civil Rights Museum are some familiar names from our southern region including Bessie Smith, Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, and Billie Holliday, among others.
2nd Annual Russell George Memorial
Earnestine & Hazel's, 531 S. Main
Sat., Jan. 2, 6-8 p.m.
You would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't enjoyed the soul burger from Earnestine and Hazel's on South Main. Typically when enjoying this fine epicurean delight, made right in front of your eyes behind the bar on a flat grill, Russell George would be nearby with a welcoming word and a warm grin. Memphis lost one of it's own two years ago, but George is still giving back with this memorial benefiting Church Health Center. And of course the E&H House Band will be there to stir your soul while you're eating a soul burger in honor of a gentle soul.
The Dixon Gallery & Gardens
