The opening reception for "The Crossroads of Memory: Carroll Clear and the American South" on June 7, 2013 attracted nearly a thousand guests to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, including his vivacious widow, Pat Cloar Milsted. Celebrating the centenary of the artist's birth (in Earle, Arkansas), the show includes 86 Cloar paintings, the largest collection of his oeuvre ever gathered in one place. "Cloar looks simple," says Stanton Thomas, curator of the exhibition, "but when you begin to take apart the pieces, you see they're really profound."
