Makeda’s Cookies MemShop, located at 488 S. Second, opened about three weeks ago. It will be open through October.
“If it goes well, we’ll be here longer,” says Tamika Heard, whose parents own Makeda’s. “We’re hoping it goes well.”
MemShop is a program that puts in pop-up shops in vacant or underused storefronts. The idea is to show the potential of a neighborhood. The first MemShop was on Broad. The latest, which includes Makeda’s, men’s clothing store OXN, and the Circuitous Succession Gallery, is along the Heritage Trail, on Second, about a block east of Central BBQ.
At the downtown Makeda’s, a sign greets customers with: “Welcome to your butteriffic experience.”
Four of Makeda’s top sellers are there: the famous butter cookie, peanut butter, chocolate chip, and oatmeal raisin. There will be a cookie of the week offered as well. This week it’s the chocolate chip pecan.
Makeda’s also sells lemon icebox pie and banana pudding pie by the slice. The crusts are made from their butter cookies.
Last Friday, a customer made a special visit for the lemon icebox pie. Heard handed her the slice. “I need another one,” the woman says. “Give me two.”
Makeda’s MemShop is open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Cookie Monster visits Makeda’s on Saturdays, noon-4 p.m.
