Whether you are looking for advice from Sinbad, “Don’t let people treat you like you’re stupid. If it sounds too good to be true, it is” or just an observation from Kevin Hart, “An unemployed court jester is nobody’s fool,” the weekend starts with laughs. Hart is performing on Fri., July 3, 8 p.m. at FedExForum, 200 S. Third. Same day, same time — tough choice. Although Hart is not suitable for all ages, so that might help with your decision.

Since we have a lot planned downtown this weekend I just wanted to let you know about some offerings on the Mississippi River that might float your boat. Two cruises are being offered. The dinner cruises are offered on the first Friday and Saturday of each month through October. That means this weekend you could be cruising and dining while watching the fireworks on Saturday. There is also a Public Sightseeing Cruise offered daily through October at 5 p.m.

The great thing about kids under the age of ten is that they believe anything you tell them. This makes it easy to seem smart and spectacular in their eyes. Which is exactly what happened with my nephew Brandon when he was a youngster. You see, Brandon’s birthday happens to be on Independence Day. So every July 4th I told him that I had a birthday surprise for him. I told him that I had ordered fireworks for his birthday and invited the whole city to view them down on the river. I was understandably the coolest aunt in the world. The problem was that at about age ten or so he didn’t believe me any longer and figured out the ruse. Brandon is now a less gullible 25-year-old who still thinks his aunt is the coolest. I like to think I had a lot of influence on his impeccable taste in aunts.
As it turns out, our Memphis fireworks show in honor of America’s birthday is more than 25 years old and still spectacular. Check out our holiday listings for other celebrations in Millington, Collierville, Germantown, and in almost every community in the Mid-South.
Gold Strike Casino, 1010 Casino Center in Tunica

Balagan in Hebrew means chaos or fiasco. In the case of this cirque production, it’s a good thing. This theatrical circus with stunning costumes, unique music, choreography, athleticism, and comedy will delight and thrill you. I can honestly say that it is sheer balagan!
Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through July 12.
If you like Greek tragedy and good old-fashioned gospel singing, do not miss this performance. Based on Sophocles’ Greek myth Oedipus and set in a contemporary African-American gospel church service , this drama’s original script was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize.
